Root Canals

You may have heard that phrase before. The dreaded root canal treatment has a pretty nasty reputation.

We’re here to tell you that it’s entirely undeserved.

That’s right. Root canal treatments are nothing at all to be afraid of. In fact, they are particularly designed to relieve very severe toothache pain.

What Is a Root Canal?

Let’s start from the very beginning. Teeth have a few different layers. The top one—the part you can see—is made of a hard material called enamel.

Enamel is the front line protector of the tooth. It keeps bacteria out and takes all the wear and tear of chewing.

Below the enamel is a softer material called dentin. Dentin is still pretty tough but not as hard as enamel. It gives support and structure to the tooth.

In the very center of the tooth is a material called pulp, which is soft and chock-full of nerves. Pulp runs all the way from the center of the crown to the bottoms of the roots through passages called canals. Hence, the term, “root canal.”

Sometimes that pulp tissue deep in the root becomes infected. This can be extremely painful, due to the high concentration of nerves in the tissue. That is when a root canal treatment is needed.

Root Canal Treatments

Root canal treatments are actually designed to get rid of pain. They do this by cleaning out any infected or damaged tissue and replacing it with a gentle, biocompatible filling material.

In fact, this procedure works very much like a regular cavity filling. The only real difference: location.

Once the inflamed pulp tissue is cleaned out and the filling placed, the tooth is capped with a dental crown, and that’s that. No more pain. No more temperature sensitivity. No need to worry about a dramatic dental procedure in the future.
